I like my coffee like I like my nights; black
and preferably not cloudy. And I prefer my
chocolate and humour dark as well, please.
My apologies if this offends some people,
but I’d rather focus on the few that enjoy it.

Nog a

Malt Madness - as it once was

When I started publishing my rants and raves about malt whisky
in 1997 the word ‘blog’ hadn’t been invented yet. If it had been, my
‘Liquid Log’ would probably have been called ‘Booze Blog’ instead.

This enhanced perspective was great and all, but it also meant that some of
the statements I’ve made on ‘Ye Olde Syte’ (see this screenshot from 2001)
needed ‘refinement’. So, it was time to re-open my blog. The design could
use an update as well, but I’m still hoping that it will come back into fashion.

That little break turned into a long one, because I enjoyed the slower pace.
What’s more, the fact that I wasn’t exchanging dozens of messages about
whisky every day gave me a broader perspective on the whisky world.

But my ‘log’ was basically the same as a blog; a continuous stream
of my purely personal opinions and experiences with malt whisky.
My Liquid Log was my own little soap box where I could write what
I wanted, whenever I wanted. And so I did - until log entry #400.

In 2012, I felt that I had pretty much written all that I wanted to write,
at least in the form of articles about whisky. So, I decided to retire
from the Malt Maniacs and take a little break from blogging.

By the way, my sincere apologies for the
cumbersome navigation of the old part of
my blog. Or the entire site for that matter...
I’ve tried to keep it together on a shoestring
budget and with limited technical skills.

So, feel free to browse the pages for 1997, 1998, 1999, 2000, 2001,
2002, 2003, 2004, 2005, 2006, 2007, 2008, 2009, 2010, 2011 or
2012 if you want to know how I looked at the whisky world at the time.

Yeah, I’m afraid so - at least for now.
There are some other parts of ‘Ye Olde Syte’ that REALLY need an update.
But I’ll use Twitter to keep the rest of the world informed about upcoming
changes to Malt Madness. Meanwhile, the more ‘ancient’ entries in my
Liquid Log may be little more than historical curiosities by now, but some
articles might still provide some enjoyment or useful information. .

Malt Whisky Blog - Updates

I’m afraid that I really can’t tell at the moment. I’m still working on an
‘advanced’ version of the Beginner’s Guide and I’m trying to come up
with ways to integrate the Distillery Data and Deviant Drams sections.
I’m also working with my brother on an web-app - but we’re amateurs
and we don’t want to worry about deadlines in our spare time.

I will focus on a few other additions to MM in the foreseeable future.
There will be the occasional fresh entry in this Liquid (B)Log, but the
main objective right now is updating (and expanding) old information.
I wouldn’t want to add to the growing (some might say steaming) pile
of misinformation about whisky on the world wide web... ;-)

So, what’s next?

So, although I hate to leave the rest of this page blank for now, you’ll just have to be patient for now.
By the way, there’s a bright side to that as well. Because patience is a virtue, it balances out the ‘vice’ whisky.
If you believe in karma (or one or more vengeful gods), it could never hurt to score some brownie points...

And if you roll that way, why stop at simply being patient? Watching my tweet feed or visiting this site every single
day to look for updates could very well be considered a form of self-punishment, couldn’t it? I’m sure that it could!
So why not do that instead of self-flagellation the next time you need to atone for some sins?

Or just scroll down and look at an empty page for a while until your head hurts...

Malt Whisky Blog - Updates

The very first stage of my affliction wasn’t too bad, but ...
... by the time ‘stage 2’ set in, the symptoms worsened.
Complete and utter madness; chaos and odd behaviour.
After the dust had settled, spirits and links were broken.
To be confirmed...

Malt Maniacs - Malt Whisky Archives

December 15, 2014 - Fate has farted in my face
once more. Some style sheets cascaded all across
‘Ye Olde Syte’ - so many pages are now difficult to
read. Sorry about that - thinking about a solution.

October 7, 2014 - I just heard that my ex-fellow
maniac Lawrence Graham from Canada was made
‘Keeper of the Quaich’. Wow, remember when we
were just a wide-eyed, ‘amateur’ whisky collective.

November 15, 2014 - Yes, entry #402 is alive.
At the start of the new millennium, stage 2 of my
‘malt madness’ set in; the Malt Maniacs collective
grew and we even set up our own ‘MM Awards’.

November 11, 2014 - Hurray! After a break that
lasted for more than two years, I’ve just published
entry #401 of my Liquid Log. It looks at phase 1
of my ‘malt madness’
from a historical perspective.

November 30, 2014 - How & when did stage 3
of my ‘malt madness’ begin? As log entry #403
explains, it was probably when I realised that
Scotch malt whisky had fundamentally changed.

December 23, 2014 - On this happy #Festivus
most of this site is still in the crapper, I’m afraid.
The sitemap provides an overview of the repairs.

December 12, 2014 - Over the past three log
entries I’ve been mostly gazing at my own navel,
but log entry #404 deals with a more practical
topic: MM webpages that can not be found...

September 18, 2014 - The Scots get to vote on
their possible independance of the UK today. It
may become a very close race - and a ‘yes’ vote
could influence whisky prices around the world.

February 1, 2014 - With the 20th birthday of
this website coming up, I decided to get to work
on version 3.0. But the first item on my ‘to do list’
was the Malt Maniacs Archives reconstruction.

September 24, 2014 - The latest press release
from “one of the most respected names in Scotch
whisky”
announces “a range of new expressions
and never-before-released single malts - the hidden
gems of its portfolio”
. They also call it a “bold move,
unprecedented in recent years”
. Wow, it seems like
the copywriter was in very high spirits indeed...

October 1, 2014 - Yes! The malt whisky season
has now started in earnest with the publication of
the 10th edition of the Malt Whisky Yearbook.
Short review: best value whisky book this year.
